THEAKSTON BREWERY MASHAM
Another of my day trips was to MASHAM in North Yorkshire England. The bus arrived in Little Market Place, near the Town Hall. Buses from Ripon, Leyburn and Richmond. It is 9 miles from Ripon and 20 miles from Harrogate. I walked round the corner and saw the large Market Square, with its Georgian buildings , created in the 18th century. The market is held on Wednesday and Saturday, first market held from 762 years ago. I asked a local person the direction to the brewery, and recieved two, Theakstons and Black Sheep. Theakstons was nearest, calling there no Brewery visit available, so made my way to Black Sheep, only a few hundred yards away. The road was hilly, ,(Masham is in The Yorkshire Dales ),there were brown tourist signs. Arriving at Black Sheep Visitor Centre i booked the first tour, in half an hour. My ticket entitled me to 3 third of a a pint drink included free, so partook one before the start of the tour. The tour was made up of 9 people. The Guide was very informative .The tour took just over an hour. There were several stairs , my legs managed ok. I finished off the 2 Third of a pint beers, i bought a pair of socks with sheep design,to remind of Black Sheep Brewery. In the well stocked Gift Shop was beer on sale what would you expect.? I noticed that the toilets were named for Ewes and Tups.----------------------Black Sheep Brewery is situated in Wellgarth Masham next door to the White bear Hotel , a Theakston pub.---Black Sheep Brewery was formed in 1992 by Paul Theakston after a family split in the other Brewery. --Theakstons was established in 1827.--------------Back in the Market Square i entered the the Kingshead Hotel Pub and enjoyed a meal and a pint of Black Sheep Bitter. Before joining my bus to return home ,i visited St Mary the Virgin Church, this church was mentioned in the English Doomsday Book.------------The historic name for Masham is Maessa Ham. The population is 1,205. The river Ure flows through Masham. It is good walking areas around Masham.Posted by alectrevor 06:30 Comments (1)
